Seattle Municipal Court

Seattle Municipal Court handles more DUI cases than any other individual municipality in Washington State.  The Seattle Police Department, including the SPD DUI Squad, files their misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor cases here.  Felony matters are filed in King County Superior Court.

The Municipal Court of Seattle is located in the Seattle Justice Center, 600 Fifth Avenue, Seattle WA, 98104.The Court also operates a courtroom in the King County Correctional Facility (Jail), 500 Fifth Avenue, Seattle WA, 98104 (located across James Street from the Court).

Below are directions to help you get to the Seattle Justice Center by bus or car.  We will meet you in the courtroom or in the hallway outside the courtroom.  There are three sets of three courts there.   You will find them on the 9th, 10th, and 11th floors.  Regardless of who is representing you, don't wait outside the courthouse.  Proceed into the courthouse and up to the floor with your courtroom.  Best advise is to have a seat in the courtroom itself, with your phone ringer turned to buzz and wait for your attorney.

DUI Penalties in Seattle Municipal Court are onerous.  Below you will find a sentencing grid that is triggered when a judge enters a finding of guilt to the crime of Driving Under the Influence into the record.  The judge can do this after a guilty plea by a defendant or after a jury finds the defendant guilty after a jury trial.

Pulled Over: Do's & Don'ts

No one plans to get pulled over for driving under the influence, so don't feel that you made a terrible mistake if you didn't follow the guidelines below. But for future reference, here are the rules of the road.

When you are pulled over:

DO:
  • Do give the officer your papers—driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance
  • Do blow into a breath-test machine BUT ONLY AT THE STATION
  • Do give blood at the hospital if your DUI involves an accident or suspected drug use
DON'T:
  • Don't say anything. As you have heard so often on TV, you have the right to remain silent. Be polite but decline comments.
  • Don't perform any Field Sobriety Tests. You are not legally required to take these voluntary tests and even a sober person can fail them.
  • Don't blow in the portable breath machine which officers keep with them in their squad cars. This machine is prone to serious errors. Simply tell the officer you are only willing to take the test on the larger machine at the station.
