Do you ever wonder if certain bars, clubs, or other drinking establishments in Washington are targeted by law enforcement more than others when it comes to initiating traffic stops for drunk driving? Though there's no definitive answer to this question, the Liquor and Cannabis Board has made an attempt to identify patterns involving suspected DUI drivers and where they consume alcohol.
After pulling over a suspected offender, Washington State Patrol troopers ask drivers the last place they were drinking. Though the responses they get are not usually confirmed, the information is recorded and eventually entered into a state database. In addition, local police departments also submit similar data to the LCB.
Last month, the Seattle PI posted a list of the most-often cited places where intoxicated driving suspects said they consumed booze. The list covered cases from 2012 through 2015. Here are the top ten establishments along with the municipalities in which they are located:
- Jazzbones – Tacoma
- McCloud's Saloon – Bremerton
- Wayne's Inn Bar and Grill - Puyallup
- Muckleshoot Casino – Auburn
- Jake's on 4th – Olympia
- Jokers – Richland
- Schafer's Bar and Grill – Sumner
- Masa – Tacoma*
- Snoqualmie Casino – Snoqualmie
- The Viking - Lacey
According to the data, 179 DUI stops were made after drivers left Jazzbones in Tacoma. Interestingly, only five of the top 25 places on the list were located outside northwest Washington.
Again, there's no information about how many of these drivers were actually convicted of DUI. But if you do plan on visiting one of these watering holes, you may want to take extra precautions lest you see flashing lights in your rear-view mirror on your way home. Also, if you are ever arrested for DUI, be sure to engage the services of a qualified DUI defense attorney.
